This is a period when both the mommy and the baby become bored. Not bored of each other 😛
But bored of feeding the same meal time and again. Also, the never-ending fuss for eating and other baby problems. Isn’t it Mom’s?
Mommy’s, time has come to include variety of new flavours and textures. You can have a shot at introducing minced or chopped food as part of 9 month baby’s diet. Your Baby is not totally ready for family foods at this stage, but still you can offer some.
You may see that your baby is trying to feed himself/herself with a spoon, but still he/she may fail! Isn’t it cute? But still it’s a good idea to offer one, to encourage his self feeding. Also, keep an eye on baby when he’s eating to avoid choking! Also continue including spices in baby food and finger foods as same as 8 months. Don’t force the baby though, as each baby is unique and adopt eating habits at their own pace. Just keep trying at your best to encourage his eating habits.
As Grandma always suggests, that nutrients provided in breast milk can’t be replaced by any of the solid foods. Only as a complementary feeding, you can include the solids in your baby’s diet. Vegetables: coconut, Tindora/Ivy Gourd, turnips , asparagus, bell peppers and almost all seasonal vegetables
Cereals: as same as 8 months
Pulses: as same as 8 months
Dairy: as same as 8 months
Non Vegetarian: chicken ( stock or clear soup)
Spices: as same as 8 months

Feed him a variety of foods, try not to repeat a fruit or vegetable in a week. That is the greatest mistake we do, we think baby likes a food and feed his favorite food repeatedly, the baby gets bored of it and starts rejecting food altogether.
Feed in Frequent intervals
Feed little amounts at frequent intervals. The aim is not to make the baby eat a whole large meal, it is to introduce a variety of foods per day and make him eat a little every meal. By feeding them at frequent intervals with different foods proper nutrition can be ensured.
It is time to stop pureeing everything. By now the baby would have developed teeth and give some work to the new teeth !!! Puree only foods that are hard for the baby to chew, other foods can be made into a slight mash and fed through pre-loaded spoons.
Make mealtimes fun
Make mealtime a happy time by playing innovative games to make them eat, like a lion and hare story, aeroplane story and so on….
Some babies have ” High chair anxiety ” when they see you bringing the high chair for meal time, they start fidgeting, crying and end up in refusing the food. If this is the case, then have your meals in the garden, patio, living room, kids playroom or on the move in the pram around the neighborhood….
Make Popsicle of the fruit purees and allow your baby to suck upon, they enjoy the activity and it also helps to soothe sore gums.Frozen breastmilk popsicle makes a great teething reliever.
Things you should keep in mind
- Thick consistency food
- Introduce different taste, flavor & texture food
- Always given freshly prepared food
- Do not forcefully feed your child
- Gradually increase the portion
- Sterilise the bowls, spoons, vessels used to feed the baby in hot water
- No salt, sugar or honey for baby until 1 year
- Always feed breast milk / formula milk on demand of the baby
- Steaming is healthier than pressure cooking.
Apart from the food chart provided, What foods can be given to 9 months old?
- Breast Milk – Continue breast milk or formula milk
- Fruits – Apple, Banana, Mango, Sapota / Chiku, Pears, Plums, Pumpkin, dates, figs, grapes
- Vegetables – Boiled & mashed vegetables like potato, carrots, sweet potato, green peas, cauliflour, beans, leafy vegetable
- Cereals & Pulses – Cereals and pulses such as rice, barley, ragi, sooji / semolina, broken wheat/ daliya, chick peas, green gram/ moong, urad dal and oats
- Combinations – Experiment different combinations or mixtures of food. Like fruit & cereal, Vegetables & pulses or lentils etc
- Dairy – Curd / yogurt, paneer/ cottage cheese, tofu
- Spices – Turmeric, garlic, ginger, asafoetida, cumin seeds, pepper, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, caroms, fenugreek, mustard seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom (all can be added in little amount say a pinch)
